Distance Education Continues to Grow
Nearly 22,000 students enrolled in a distance education course last year at
South Dakota public universities. A new report presented to the South Dakota Board of Regents
shows the popularity of distance education continues to grow, although the rate of growth slowed

South Dakota job growth in the biosciences is outpacing the nation, and South Dakota State University now has a new doctoral degree to prepare its graduates for high-tech careers in that growing field.
BHSU President Schallenkamp Announces Plans to Retire
Kay Schallenkamp, president of Black Hills State University since 2006, will retire
from the South Dakota public higher education system at the end of the 2013-14 academic year, the South
Dakota Board of Regents said. The announcement was made Friday on the Spearfish campus.
Fall Enrollment Stable at Public Universities; FTE Numbers Up
Enrollment at South Dakota’s six public universities remained stable again this
fall, the South Dakota Board of Regents reported. The number of full-time equivalent
students being served was up by 313, while headcount enrollment was down only slightly.
Public Universities Grow Graduates by 33 Percent Since 2005
The trend of increasing graduate numbers at South Dakota public universities
continues, as new data show the total number of students graduating with an
associate or bachelor degree at the six public universities increased by 33 percent since 2005.
