For Immediate Release 17 December 1999 Board of Regents Honors NSU Student GroupsAberdeen, SD - At its regular business meeting held today at Northern State University, the Board of Regents recognized two of the university's student organizations. Regents President Harvey C. Jewett, IV, presented the awards on behalf of the Board. "Student organizations expand learning beyond the classroom and into the community. Members of these organizations gain strong leadership skills and learn the importance of contributing to the community. The Board is pleased to recognize the work of these students." NSU Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Tim Barnett, presented the student organizations to the Board. "I am proud to present these two groups to the Board. They exemplify Northern's commitment to providing experiences to students that complement their classroom learning while contributing to the university and community," said Barnett. The award for academic excellence was presented to the NSU History Club for its promotion of history at NSU and in the Aberdeen community. During the past year members have been involved in speaking events and have presented papers at conferences around the state and at local competitions. The History Club helped recreate history during their annual rendezvous weekend with the Dakota Territory Muzzleloaders. The club also sponsored NSU students to judge high school students at the regional National History Day. The award for organizational leadership was given to NSU Student Publications for providing a valued service to students, faculty and staff at NSU through the publication of Northern's biweekly newspaper the Exponent and the Pasque yearbook. Members of NSU Student Publications gain experience in the publishing field and also build leadership skills through participation in the complete publishing process which includes everything form hiring editors to determining style and policy. Accepting the award for the NSU History Club were Rachel Kercher, president, Dan Brosz, vice president, Dr. Ric Dias, advisor. Accepting the award for NSU Student Publications were Jennifer Groebner, Exponent editor and Tracy Russman, Student Publications advisor. Also present was Ryan Spellerberg. -END- |
