Board of Regents Honors Student Organizations at SDSMT

RAPID CITY—At its regular business meeting held today at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T), the Board of Regents recognized the contributions of two of the university’s student organizations. On behalf of the Regents, President Harvey C. Jewett, IV, of Aberdeen, presented the awards for academic excellence and for organizational leadership. "Of all the activities of the Regents, bestowing these awards gives me personally the greatest pleasure. The whole college experience is more than just classrooms and books. Through organizations such as these, our students develop a sense of responsibility to their university and the community in which they live. They hone leadership skills that will serve them throughout their lives."

SDSM&T President Richard Gowen presented the student organizations to the Board. "I am delighted that the Board instituted these awards as a way to recognize student achievement. The young people learn that service is a necessary part of citizenship. Through teamwork and commitment they can accomplish much more than any individual working alone," said Gowen.

The award for academic excellence was presented to the SDSM&T Tech Geological Association for its efforts to promote earth science education. As outreach to the elementary and secondary schools in the area, members provide guest lectures and donated mineral kits. In their notable Friday Lecture Series, the association brings in travelling professors and professionals from around the world to present on topics of interest to faculty, students and professionals in geology and geological engineering fields.

The award for organizational leadership was given to the Ski and Snowboard Club for its efforts to provide winter recreational activities for students, faculty and staff. The club has arranged ski trips out-of-state. It has also sponsored a high school ski team with both financial support and coaching.

Accepting the award for the Tech Geological Association was Patrick Kozak, Graduate Student Coordinator. Association member Brad Stock was also present. Accepting the award for the Ski and Snowboard Club were Jordan Larson, President, Dusten Shad, Vice President, and Stephanie Hummel, Secretary/Treasurer.
