National Search Under Way for Northern State President PIERRE - The South Dakota Board of Regents has launched a national search for a new president at Northern State University in Aberdeen. "We are looking for a dynamic and creative leader with an established reputation in higher education administration," said Regent Pat Lebrun, who chairs the search. "We expect to begin reviewing credentials in early December, with the goal of having the successful candidate on board in Aberdeen by next July." A search and screen committee, which includes campus community representatives, met recently to review the president's qualifications. That information will be featured in advertisements and related information used in the search process. The new president will succeed John Hilpert, who was named this fall to lead Delta State University in Mississippi. Northern State University serves more than 3,100 students, with an operating budget of about $27.5 million. It offers a comprehensive curriculum featuring 46 undergraduate and graduate majors in the liberal arts and sciences, education, business, and technology. "A core mission for Northern State University is the integration of distance delivery and other instructional technologies into all of its degree programs," Lebrun said. "We are looking for a president who will provide exceptional leadership in that area. In addition, the candidate we choose will be focused on academic excellence, ever-changing institutional needs, and securing external support for the university's operating and capital needs." Lebrun said a qualified candidate would also have organizational leadership experience, the ability to work with many groups within the university and community, and be an effective communicator and system collaborator. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The search committee encourages individuals to nominate persons who might be contacted about the presidency.
