Regents' Information Systems Director Receives Award

PIERRE - The director of the Regents' Information Systems for the South Dakota Board of Regents has received special recognition from the South Dakota Library Association (SDLA).

Warren J. Wilson received the SDLA's 2003 Friend of the Library award at the group's annual meeting last week. Wilson has been employed with the Regents' Information Systems in Vermillion since 1990.

"This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated initiative, support, and creativity on behalf of a South Dakota library or libraries," said Robert T. Tad Perry, the Regents' executive director. "Warren is deeply involved in issues affecting not only our university libraries, but he's also a leader in efforts to enhance the sharing of library resources statewide through the South Dakota Library Network."

The Regents operate the South Dakota Library Network on behalf of member libraries across the state. Earlier this year, a $1.3 million project was launched to install new software that will improve the state library network's operation. A $500,000 congressional award was secured to pay for part of the project's cost.

"Libraries offer patrons the 'old and the new'- access to long-standing, historical resources, as well as to new cutting-edge technologies," Wilson said. "As the new library network system comes online, we will have many more Web interfaces for library patrons to utilize, as well as digital resources."

The SDLA award recognized Wilson for his work with the library network, as well as his efforts to support funding needs for libraries across the state. He also is a member and past chairman of the South Dakota State Library Board.
