Board of Regents Signs Memorandum with NSU Foundation

BROOKINGS - An agreement between the South Dakota Board of Regents and the Northern State University Foundation signed Friday seeks to establish a more business-like relationship between the two entities.

Similar agreements are expected between the board and other foundations representing the six public universities in South Dakota, according to Harvey C. Jewett, president of the Board of Regents.

"This memorandum of understanding reinforces the independence of the foundation and the Board of Regents in their respective domains," Jewett said. "But it also is an opportunity to coordinate all efforts to more effectively advance our common purposes."

"There must be a strong collaborative effort among the Regents, the university, and the foundation for successful fundraising," said Dottie Krzyzanoski, executive director of the NSU Foundation. This agreement defines the distinctive roles of the governing and foundation boards, she said, and promotes respect for each other's responsibilities.

"In pursuing the resources needed to sustain and enhance the quality of public higher education in South Dakota, it is clear that state governing boards, the higher education institutions, and the foundation boards working with those institutions are all in the game together," Jewett noted.

The memorandum sets out various expectations governing the relationship among the Board of Regents, the public universities, and their respective foundations. "The two individual boards-representing the Regents and the foundations-do bring independent responsibilities to a collaborative undertaking," Jewett said. "This document serves to set out those roles and responsibilities."
