Cozzetto Named Interim President at Northern State University

ABERDEEN – Don A. Cozzetto, academic vice president at Northern State University, will become interim president of Northern State University, the South Dakota Board of Regents announced Friday.

Cozzetto assumes the duties from NSU President John Hilpert, who is leaving the Aberdeen campus to become president of Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss. The Board of Regents at its August meeting will take official action to ratify Cozzetto’s interim appointment, which will be effective Sept. 1.

“We are pleased to have someone of Don Cozzetto’s experience and background taking the helm at Northern while we launch our search for a new president,” said Regents President Harvey C. Jewett. “Don’s familiarity with the campus, its faculty, students, and staff assures a smooth transition during this interim.”

Cozzetto has been the vice president for academic affairs and professor of political science at Northern since 1999. Prior to that, he was professor and dean of the College of Professional Studies at Florida Gulf Coast University. In the Aberdeen community, Cozzetto takes an active role, serving on the board and as former board president of the Brown County United Way and on the foundation board for the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

His academic expertise and interests are focused on public personnel, public budgeting, and financial management. He has published more than 25 books and journal articles in public administration and public policy, and has acted as a consultant to a number of state, county, and municipal public and non-for-profit organizations in both the U.S. and Canada. He served in senior management positions for Canadian government prior to his higher education career.

His academic resume also includes positions at the University of North Dakota and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. In 1993-94, he was a fellow in public policy analysis at the University of Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey Institute.

He holds a B.A. degree from Notre Dame University (British Columbia), a M.A./M.P.A. from Carleton University, and a Ph.D. in public administration and public policy from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
