For Immediate Release: Wednesday, June 25, 2003 Organization Awards Presented to NSU Student Groups ABERDEEN – The South Dakota Board of Regents presented awards Wednesday to three student organizations from Northern State University. "Northern State University has more than 60 student-led organizations that provide students with the opportunity to be involved on-campus," said Tim Barnett, vice president for student affairs. "These three organizations exemplify not only the quality of student-run organizations at Northern, but also the commitment to excellence by the students for programs they believe important." The NSU groups receiving recognition are: § Award for Academic Excellence – Members of the Society of Legal Professions are committed to academic excellence through their successful participation in undergraduate mock trial programs. Members raise money to finance their participation in these programs, while at the same time spending an average 15 hours per week preparing for the tournaments. As a result of their efforts, the society’s senior members are being accepted into top-rated law schools. § Community Service Award – NSU Student Ambassadors stress involvement in campus activities and volunteerism. Students are nominated as ambassadors based on character, GPA, campus involvement, and leadership potential. The group’s volunteer efforts this year included March of Dimes Walk America, campus blood drive, Adopt-A-Highway, Kids Voting, Wylie Park’s Haunted Forest, Salvation Army bell ringing, and the Aberdeen Humane Society, among others. § Award for Organizational Leadership – Literary awareness on campus and throughout the Aberdeen community is the goal of the NSU English Club. The club hosts monthly programs, open microphone nights, and videoconferences. Students also have the opportunity to see their work published in an anthology of original works called the “Shelterbelt.” "Student organizations are an important part of Northern's College of Arts and Sciences," said Dean Jay Ruud. "They allow students to explore their major and career interests in exciting ways that augment their classroom experiences. The Society of Legal Professions and the English Club are two of our best, most active student organizations, and we applaud them for their accomplishments this year."
