Three USD Student Groups Earn RecognitionVERMILLION – The South Dakota Board of Regents presented awards Friday to three student organizations at The University of South Dakota. One of the awards, the Community Service Award, is a new honor authorized by the Regents to recognize student efforts in community service activities external to the campus. “We are proud of these organizations and appreciate the Board of Regents recognition,” said Dave Lorenz, Dean of Students. “These three organizations are outstanding examples of the over 120 student organizations on our campus.” The USD groups receiving recognition are: § Award for Academic Excellence – The Vermillion Literary Project is recognized for its wide variety of literary activities. The literary project publishes a literary magazine each year that features work contributed by USD students and the public. Short-story contests also are sponsored and the winners published in the literary magazine. The group presents a poetry festival featuring workshops conducted by published poets. A member of the Vermillion Literacy Project also hosts Project Radio, a campus radio show, each Sunday. § Community Service Award – The South Dakota Sigma Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon focuses its community service on those less fortunate. A Christmas toy drive makes for a brighter holiday for many Vermillion children. The chapter works with the Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll drive and the Prison Congregation of America. Chapter members volunteered their carpentry skills to make repairs on USD’s Newman Center, and also adopted a local highway to clean roadsides. The group sponsors a volleyball tournament to benefit the Children’s Home Society and participates in a campus dance marathon to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. § Award for Organizational Leadership – The Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter, which has about 150 active members, participates monthly in a building project for a family in need. Fundraisers sponsored throughout the year support various charities, including a Sioux Falls homeless shelter and the Sioux City Habitat for Humanity. Many of the members also donate their services during spring break to travel to other areas of the country and build a house from the ground up—a project known as the Collegiate Challenge Spring Break. -30- |
