National Search Begins for SDSMT President

PIERRE – The South Dakota Board of Regents has begun a national search to find a new president for the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City.

“We expect to recruit a person who is a national leader in higher education administration,” said Regent Pat Lebrun, who chairs the search. “We plan to begin reviewing credentials by the middle of November, and hope to have the search completed so that a new president is ready to take office next July 1.” The Regents’ search committee, along with a Campus Advisory Committee, met this week to review the president’s qualifications. That information will be featured in advertisements and related information used in the search process.

The new president will succeed Richard Gowen, who retires next year after 14 years at the helm of SDSMT. The institution serves about 2,400 campus-based students, with a budget of about $33.1 million. It offers graduate and undergraduate programs in various engineering disciplines, mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, geology, and interdisciplinary sciences.

“We are looking for a creative and energetic leader who will focus on the three vital functions in American higher education—instruction, research, and public service,” Lebrun said. “The Regents are seeking outstanding candidates who will provide a vision of academic excellence, are accepting of change in meeting institutional needs, and will work to secure external sources for the university’s operating and capital needs.”

Lebrun said a qualified candidate would also have organizational leadership experience, the ability to work with many groups within the university and community, and be an effective communicator and system collaborator.

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Candidates should submit a letter of interest, a current resume, and the names, addresses, and phone numbers of at least five references to Regent Pat Lebrun, Search Committee Chair, South Dakota Board of Regents, 306 East Capitol Avenue, Suite 200, Pierre, SD 57501-2545. Candidates with questions about the process may contact Regents’ Executive Director Robert T. Tad Perry at (605) 773-3455 or George R. Johnson Jr., Academic Search Consultation Service, at (202) 332-4049.
