| For Immediate Release: Friday, October 11, 2002 SDSU Pharmacy Organizations Recognized by RegentsBROOKINGS – Two student pharmacy organizations at South Dakota State University received awards Friday for academic excellence and leadership from the South Dakota Board of Regents. During the board’s meeting in Brookings, the Academy of Students of Pharmacy received an award for organizational leadership, while the academic excellence award was presented to Rho Chi Honor Society. “We are pleased to honor the efforts of these students in academic scholarship and community service,” Regents Vice President Rudy Nef said. “These projects are a great complement to the classroom learning under way across the SDSU campus.” The 166 members of the Academy of Students of Pharmacy (ASP) are actively involved in their community and future profession. The Operation Immunization Committee conducted a public education campaign on the SDSU campus about meningitis vaccine, and assisted in administering the shots. The group performs blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol screenings for state lawmakers at its legislative days in Pierre. ASP also started a new high school outreach program to provide prospective students information about the pharmacy profession. The Tau Chapter of Rho Chi Honor Society serves the academic needs of more than 300 students and faculty in the College of Pharmacy at SDSU. Among its activities, Rho Chi provides guidance to graduate students, offers opportunities for students to share their research, and assists in securing subscriptions to scholarly publications. Accepting the award for the Academy of Students of Pharmacy were Emily Maydew and Becky Baer. Teresa Seefeldt and Dr. Chandradhar Dwivedi received the award on behalf of the Rho Chi Honor Society. -30-
