For Immediate Release: Friday, June 28, 2002 Regents Recognize Outstanding NSU Student Organizations ABERDEEN
The South Dakota Board of Regents, meeting Friday at Northern State University,
recognized the work of two outstanding student organizations on the NSU campus. The Campus
Activities Board received an organizational leadership award, while the academic
excellence award went to the Society of Legal Professions. It is always a pleasure for the Regents to recognize outstanding group efforts by students on the campuses, Board President Harvey C. Jewett said. Part of the experience of being a college student is learning valuable leadership skills, and these organizations provide those kind of opportunities. The Campus Activities Board works on projects to bring quality programming to NSU students. Students handle the entire advance planning for events, including contracting, booking venues, advertising, and arranging accommodations for visiting artists. The activities board has sponsored dances, comedians, game shows, an annual spring ball, and special events such as an Easter egg hunt. A new event staged this past year was a Mardi Gras-themed dance. The Campus Activities Board last year was named the most improved student organization at NSU. The Society of Legal Professions (SLP) provides guidance and learning opportunities for NSU students interested in the legal field. In its first two years of existence, the NSU society attended national mediation competitions in 2000 and 2001 and came back with top-10 finishes each time. Academic excellence and community service are stressed, with student members holding an average 3.5 GPA and contributing about 12 hours of community service each month. Accepting the award for the Campus Activities Board were Pam Fitzgerald, Kelly Seyer, Jvonne Heard, Alison Bassen, and advisers Becky Boyle and Becky Kuch. Scott Bender, Nichole Townsend, and Adviser Tove¢ Bormes accepted the award for the Society of Legal Professions. -30- |
