Regents Present Awards to NSU Student Organizations ABERDEEN-The South Dakota Board of Regents, meeting today at Northern State University, presented awards to two student organizations from NSU. President Harvey C. Jewett presented the awards on the Board's behalf. "Promoting academics through organizations like the two honored today is an excellent way for students to use their knowledge to benefit their campus and community," said Jewett. Dr. Tim Barnett, Vice President for Student Affairs presented the groups to the board. "We have a superior group of students at Northern. Their hard work and commitment shows in every activity they undertake," said Barnett. The award for academic excellence was presented to the NSU Accounting Club. One of the main activities of the NSU Accounting Club is to offer tutoring in accounting to all Northern students. It also contributes to Northern and the community through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. Accounting Club members spend a couple of hours two nights a week to provide income tax assistance to students and members of the community. Club members can answer questions, electronically file returns, or assist in the completion of an entire tax return. Members are rewarded for their participation in the club by receiving preparation for work in the accounting field and information granted through guest speakers and trips to local organizations. The award for organizational leadership was presented to the NSU Science Club for its creation of camaraderie among students studying science at NSU and for sponsoring fun educational activities for Northern and the community. Some of the events the club has sponsored include: Orientation Leadership, Fall New Student Retreat Weekend, new student mentoring, Medical Professional Career Information Panel, Northern Bound Days Leadership, science fair activity coordinators, guest lecturer, spring field trip, Rainbow Party and a bachelor/bachelorette auction. The club is open to all NSU students. Accounting Club Vice President Bev Ulrich and Advisor Paul Everson accepted the award for the Accounting Club. Also in attendance were members Kristen Boyle and John Tieszan. Science Club members Samantha Wilcox and Janelle Stahl accepted the award for the Science Club. Advisor Keith Wrage was also in attendance to help accept the award. -END- |
