USD to Hold College Board Advanced Placement Institutes in
Economics and United States History

PIERRE- The South Dakota Board of Regents will host two College Board Advanced Placement Institutes at the University of South Dakota campus. An institute in economics will be held from June 11-16 and an institute in United States history will be held from July 16-21. The institutes will be offered to teachers who want to prepare high school students for College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) examinations. The institute in economics will be under the direction of Dr. Robert Reinke, Professor of economics at USD. The United States history institute will be headed by Dr. Robert Hilderbrand, Professor in the USD history department.

Administered by the College Board, the Advanced Placement Program gives high school students the opportunity to take courses that are equivalent to first-year college courses. The College Board does not require that the high school teachers have any special training but it does encourage teachers to attend special workshops or courses intended to assist them. The calculus AB and physics institutes will provide teachers with course content, teaching methods, and information on how to prepare their students for the AP examinations.

Announcements and application materials have been mailed to school board presidents, superintendents, and secondary principals. Any interested teacher should contact his or her school officials. Six other AP institutes will be held this summer:

• calculus AB at South Dakota State University from June 25-30
• chemistry at Northern State University from June 11-16
• computer science at Dakota State University from July 16-26
• English literature and composition at Black Hills State University from June 18-23
• environmental science at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology from June 11-15
• physics at South Dakota State University from July 16-21

High school teachers who enroll in the CBAP institutes have the option of earning two hours of graduate credit. Those who do not want to earn college credit will be charged only for materials. Those seeking credit will be required to complete specific course requirements and will be charged applicable tuition rates.
