Regental System General Education Review

 

This page has been established to keep personnel within the Regental system informed about the current status of the General Education Review.  Work undertaken by the steering committee, and updates provided to the Board of Regents and the Academic Affairs Council will be posted here to ensure transparency for the review process.

 

Background

Over the past two years, the Academic Affairs Council (AAC) has been discussing Board of Regents Policy 2:7 and 2:26 which provide guidance for the System (SGR’s) and Institutional Graduation Requirements (IGR’s).  For the BOR Planning Session in August, a formal agenda item was developed to provide a comprehensive history on system policy in this area, outline challenges associated with the evolving landscape of higher education, and highlight national level activities underway at institutions/systems around the country.  The agenda item concluded with three action items seeking to engage the system in a preliminary review during the 2014-15 academic year.  These three action items include: 

  • A review of the student learning outcomes that result in unique Institutional Graduation Requirements;
  • A review of the continued value of the CAAP examination for assessing system General Education and establishing student academic proficiency;
  • Alignment of system General Education policy with national efforts to establish a coordinated foundation for Liberal Arts Education.

Steering Committee & Timeline

During the September 2014 meeting, AAC agreed that the most effective approach for addressing these action items would be to establish a coordinating/steering committee representing faculty and campus leadership.  This steering committee would then be charged with evaluating the landscape of current national initiatives[1] and identify one that could serve to provide a viable roadmap for facilitating significant change for the system’s approach to general education.
