Reduced Tuition - Children of Deceased Firefighters, Police Officers or EMTs

Background Information:

In accordance with state law (see SDCL 13-55-22), certain survivors of tragic accidents qualify for tuition waivers.  Eligibility requirements are listed below:

  • A parent died as a direct result of injuries received in the performance of official duties.
  • The deceased parent was employed as a firefighter, certified law enforcement officer, or emergency medical technician (positions as specifically defined in SDCL 13-55-21).
  • This tragedy occurred before the child turned 21.

If eligibility is confirmed, the student will receive a 100% tuition waiver.

Notes:

  • The waiver applies exclusively to tuition, not to fees.
  • The tuition waiver applies to state-support courses - for the most part, these are campus-based and involve face-to-face instruction.  It does not apply to self-support courses - those that are offered at learning centers and other off-campus locations as well as those that entail distance learning.
  • This program supports students who are pursuing undergraduate (not graduate) degrees.
  • Participants must complete baccalaureate degrees within thirty-six months or eight terms.

Application Process:

  • Print hard copy of this regental form and complete as directed; be sure to attach a copy of the death certificate.
  • Submit to the Registrar’s Office or Business Office at your home university.
