The State of Public Higher Education - 1998
State Policy Goal 5
Faculty Professional Development: The universities will provide faculty with the professional development opportunities, time, and resources needed to remain current in their disciplines, and to redesign courses in order to integrate current technologies.
In January 1996, the Board approved a program of reinvestment that included seven objectives to which the universities were to redirect resources. One of those objectives was to provide faculty with the resources necessary to redesign courses to meet changing requirements for course delivery through inter-institutional collaboration and technological delivery on and off campus. To meet this objective the following strategies were implemented:
A special program created by Governor Janklow allowed faculty at the six public universities to improve their knowledge of instructional technology and to redesign a course to use technology. The program, Governor Janklows Faculty Awards for Teaching with Technology, was designed to enable South Dakota public university faculty to develop skills in using computer technology in their classrooms. Full-time tenured faculty members competed for the technology awards by submitting proposals. Each grant award consisted of compensation for three months during the summer and support funds that were used for travel, training, equipment, and software associated with the project. Fifty-seven faculty, who won the awards, will serve as mentors to other professors at their campuses.
