The State of Public Higher Education - 1998
State Policy Goal 4
Human Resources: The universities will attract and retain highly qualified professionals needed to carry out their teaching, service, and research missions.
South Dakota public universities realize that well trained and prepared faculty are key in offering quality education. To ensure students are receiving the best education possible, South Dakota public universities hire qualified professionals. The chart to the right shows the percentage increase of faculty with terminal degrees from 1990 to 1998.
The chart below shows South Dakota salaries compared to those of surrounding states. To make salaries on South Dakota campuses more competitive with other states the Board initiated a salary competitiveness plan. The plan will increase salaries for faculty and non-faculty by 10.6% over the next three years. When the analysis is restricted to regional peers (e.g. excluding the University of Minnesota, the University of Nebraska, and the other large Iowa public institutions) South Dakota trails the market by 16.62%.
