State Students Earn Recognition
The South Dakota Board of
Regents has awarded student organizations at Dakota State University
special recognition for their academic work, community service, and
leadership.

Expands Programs and Outreach to New Sites
The University of South Dakota
will bring its master’s degree in computer science to three tribal
colleges early next year. The South Dakota Board of Regents approved
the delivery of the M.S. degree via technology to Sinte Gleska University,
Oglala Lakota College, and Sisseton Wahpeton College.

Academic Programs Authorized at Public Universities
The South Dakota Board of
Regents approved three new degree programs at public universities, including
a cooperative plan for a graduate degree in physics, as well as a
doctorate in nursing practice and a master’s degree in social
work.

Delivery Option Approved for Secondary Teacher Certification
South Dakota’s public
universities have just made it easier for college graduates to return
to school to get the courses they will need to be certified to teach
in high schools across the state.

Students at South Dakota public
universities continue to outperform their counterparts across the country
on an exam gauging student aptitude at the end of their first two
years of college.

Higher Education Offerings Prove Popular
Public universities in South
Dakota saw a 30 percent increase in the number of students enrolling
in some type of distance education course in 2007-08, according to a
report
presented to the Board of Regents.

A national report gives South
Dakota higher education above-average marks for

to participate in higher education, and the number of undergraduate
degrees awarded relative to students enrolled. However, Measuring Up
2008: The State Report Card on Higher Education says the state still
needs to look for ways to improve college affordability.

Higher Education Joins in Cost-Saving Measures
Recognizing the uncertain
financial times facing this country and in support of
Gov. Mike Rounds’ leadership as he responds in a fiscally prudent
way, the eight institutions under South Dakota Board of Regents’
authority will join with state executive branch agencies to evaluate
spending approaches in the coming months.
