Student Groups Recognized
The South Dakota Board of
Regents gave awards to three student organizations from DSU. Assistant
Director of Student Activities Mandy Parpart presented the student groups
to the board.

Work Together on Academic Initiatives
Representatives from all six South Dakota public universities have partnered
to enhance opportunities for students to engage in international and
civic-minded education.
959
New Opportunity Scholarships Awarded
South Dakota’s colleges,
universities, and technical institutes welcomed the largest group of
Opportunity Scholarship recipients this fall since the state began awarding
the scholarships in 2004. There are 959 new recipients enrolled as college
freshmen this fall; that is 11 percent more Opportunity Scholarship
recipients than in either of the previous two years’ freshmen
classes.

Transfer Agreement Approved in Human Services Field
The South Dakota Board of
Regents has approved another credit-transfer agreement, this one between
Black Hills State University and Western Dakota Technical Institute,
bringing the total number of agreements system-wide to 224.

Majors to be Offered in Sioux Falls
The South Dakota Board of
Regents gave approval for five existing academic programs to be delivered
at the South Dakota Public Universities & Research Center in Sioux
Falls.

Enrollment Gains Set Record for Public University System
Total enrollment in the South
Dakota public university system was up slightly this fall, setting a
new record enrollment of 30,901 students, the South Dakota Board of
Regents announced.

Applaud Spellings Commission Report
U.S. Education Secretary Margaret
Spellings says higher education needs to do more to ensure that students
are prepared for college, able to get the financial aid they need, and
assessed on what they learn in the college classroom. Speaking at the
National Press Club in Washington, Spellings threw her support behind
several recommendations from the Commission on the Future of Higher
Education, a panel she created a year ago.

Chicoine
to Lead South Dakota State University
David L. Chicoine, a native
of Elk Point, S.D., and a 1969 graduate of South Dakota State University,
currently the vice president for technology and economic development
at the University of Illinois, will become the 19th president of SDSU,
the South Dakota Board of Regents announced.
