Regents Advance Plans for New Ph.D. Programs

In a move to advance university-based research that leads to more economic development for the state, the South Dakota Board of Regents plans six new doctoral-level programs in science and medical fields.

Regents Examine General Education Requirements

The South Dakota Board of Regents updated its standards for foundation courses that public university students must complete on their way to earning a bachelor’s degree.


Regents Approve Forensic Technology and Audiology Programs

The South Dakota Board of Regents approved a new bachelor’s degree in scientific forensic technology at Dakota State University and a clinical doctorate in audiology at The University of South Dakota.

USD and SDSMT Propose New Admissions Standards

Higher admissions standards—aimed at raising student expectations and enhancing institutional reputation—are being proposed by The University of South Dakota and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Student Athletes Do Well Academically
A new report prepared for the South Dakota Board of Regents shows that student athletes at the six public universities stack up well academically when compared to the general student body.

Distance Education Continues to Grow
Distance delivery of courses from South Dakota’s public universities continues to grow. Total student headcount in both spring and summer terms this year increased by 30 percent over the same period a year ago. There were 3,928 students enrolled in distance delivered coursework in spring 2004. Another 2,546 were served in the summer 2004 term.

Schloss Appointed Deaf School Superintendent

Maureen Schloss, who served as interim superintendent at the South Dakota School for the Deaf this fall, has been named to the post permanently.

Lake Area Tech, Board of Regents Reach Agreement

Lake Area Technical Institute and the South Dakota Board of Regents agreed to work together to bring more postsecondary education opportunities to students in northeast South Dakota. Lake Area students will benefit from program-specific transfers to the public universities, while the university system assumes ultimate responsibility for the college transfer general education foundation courses those students take.
