Governor Janklow Proclaims Next Week: "Higher Education Week"
PIERRE, SDGovernor William J. Janklow has proclaimed the week of November 10-14, 1997, as "Higher Education Week" to recognize South Dakotas public universities for opening doors to possibilities for the state and its people through teaching, research, and outreach service. The proclamation declares that investments in public higher education open doors that develop leadership in government, business, education, and the arts; provide individual opportunities to attain economic security, and support personal growth. The Unified System of Public Higher Education reflects South Dakota values and serves as an essential key to prepare South Dakota for the future. A copy of the proclamation is attached.
Governor Janklow said, "Our public universities provide an invaluable resource to the states people, not just through teaching, but also through research and service in agriculture and areas affecting business and industry. Higher Education Week offers a chance for educators, business people, and others to find new ways to work together to create opportunity and improve quality of life for South Dakotans."
Board of Regents President David Gienapp said, "It is a pleasure to have South Dakotas public universities recognized in such a way by the Governor. The universities have offered quality, opportunity, and value, and continue to strive for greater levels of achievement and accessibility for everyone in South Dakota."
In conjunction with the week, the Board of Regents will release the third edition of The State of Public Higher Education. The publication includes statistics and commentary on the current condition and environment for public higher education in South Dakota.
