Board of Regents Releases Guide to Advanced Placement
PIERRE&mdashThis week the Board of Regents released The South Dakota Board of Regents Guide to Advanced Placement at Regental Institutions. A copy is available by following the "Universty Information" link on the Board of Regents World Wide Web homepage at www.ris.sdbor.edu.
The Advanced Placement (AP) Program provides an opportunity for academically motivated high school students to earn college credit and is administered by The College Board, the same organization that administers the SAT to high school juniors and seniors. The AP courses are taught in high schools by high school teachers and qualify students to take an AP examination. If students taking the exam score well enough, they can earn college credit.
The purpose of the Regents&rsquo guide is to provide information to high school students and their teachers on how AP credit is awarded at South Dakota&rsquos public universities. AP credit awarded by one university will transfer to all public institutions. The minimum examination score required (3) is that suggested by The College Board, and in some disciplines the universities award additional credit for higher scores. The Guide includes the following information by institution for each AP examination:
Regents Executive Director Robert T. Tad Perry said, "Providing college credit to high school students who successfully complete an AP examination contributes to a 'seamless education' system in South Dakota. Further, it is an effective and efficient use of public resources and can reduce the time students take to complete their degree. The Regental universities are committed to working with South Dakota's high schools to increase the number of students who have the opportunity to earn college credit through AP courses and examinations." In the past two academic years, 128 South Dakota high school graduates were awarded AP credit for one or more courses.
