Board of Regents Awards Fowler-Kaden Scholarship

PIERRE, SD-Today the Board of Regents announced that Kelli Kirschenmann, a senior at Aberdeen Central High School, is the winner of the Annis Irene Fowler-Kaden Scholarship. Kirschenmann, of Aberdeen, plans to attend Northern State University to study Elementary Education.

Kirschenmann is the ninth student to be awarded the scholarship and has a 4.0 GPA and participates in the school band, Keystone Society, and Students Against Drunk Driving. She was selected for the scholarship on the basis of her academic record, high school achievements, and an original essay on the roles of teachers, school administrators, and parents in reducing crime in schools.

The $1,000 award, to be applied at a South Dakota public university, was established in 1989 by the family of Annis Irene Fowler-Kaden to recognize students embodying Fowler-Kaden's deep commitment to education. Born to an immigrant family in Grant County, South Dakota, Annis Fowler began a teaching career in 1927 that spanned nearly fifty years. She received her B.A. from Northern Normal School and eventually specialized in teaching young students with learning disabilities.

Information about the Fowler-Kaden Scholarship and other awards available through the Board of Regents may be obtained from high school guidance counselors and campus financial aid offices.
