Special Schools

The South Dakota School for the Deaf and the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually
Impaired have the expertise and resources to meet the special learning needs of students with vision
or hearing loss. No other school district, co-op or agency in the state has equivalent expertise. Services
are provided to parents and local school districts throughout the state at no charge because of a general
fund appropriation. This provides the flexibility to serve young children at home and students in public
schools as well as students who are enrolled on campus. The table provides the number of children
served by the School for the Deaf and School for the Blind and Visually Impaired from each county.
