An increasing number of students at South Dakota universities rely on financial aid to pay higher
education costs. The type of financial aid available has shifted from non-obligation aid to obligation
aid, that is from grants and scholarships to loans and work-study. The average loan debt of a graduate
with a baccalaureate degree has increased throughout the decade.
