Northern State University is a multi-purpose, regional institution of higher education, authorized for the people of South Dakota by the South Dakota Legislature. Founded as a normal and industrial school to serve the northern part of the state, the University has diversified its offerings to address the emerging needs of the students, community, and region. This mission will be carried out through cooperative efforts with all appropriate state agencies, educational cooperatives, local education agencies, and colleges and universities. It is recognized that the mission of the South Dakota School for the Deaf is a significant part of the continuum of services in the statewide delivery system for children in need of special education or special education and related services.
