In face-to-face instruction
a credit hour typically represents the amount of time spent
"in class" each week for a traditional course.
For example, a one-credit-hour class would involve one hour of time
spent in class plus two hours of out-of-class study time each week.
Distance education
courses are very different as there typically is no set
class time. However, a distance education course does require as
much, if not more, effort than a traditional face-to-face course.
The following chart, indicating
the number of credit hours of a course and the number of weeks a
course lasts, represents the typical hours of studying and
class work a distance education student should expect to dedicate
each week for a course. For example, a three-credit distance
education course which last for 12 weeks would require 11 hours
each week studying and preparing for the course. If that same course
lasted only four weeks (one-third of the time) it would require
34 hours worth of effort each week to successfully complete the
course.
