Information for South Dakota Counselors

The EUC is a single point of contact for information and access to distance education and training available from the six South Dakota public universities.

Course Delivery Methods

The Internet is a computer network comprised of smaller networks that are all linked together in order to share vast amounts of knowledge. Courses offered through the Internet can be one of two types.

    1. One type of Internet course is on a semester schedule. These courses start and end on specific dates that coincide with the semester start and end dates for on-campus courses. These courses must be completed by the end of the semester.
    2. The other type of Internet course is asynchronous, which means that it can be taken at any time and is self-paced. There are no specific start and end dates for these courses. These courses usually need to be completed one year from the date the student begins the course.
  • South Dakota Public Television

South Dakota Public Broadcasting offers students another choice in their educational experience. Select courses can be viewed on South Dakota Public Television.

Correspondence/Independent Study courses offer students an alternative learning experience. All necessary course materials and information will be sent by US mail to the students. Students complete various assignments and then send them back to the university offering the course. The assignments are then graded and returned to the students. Instructors provide feedback on class assignments and exams that are completed by students taking these self-paced courses.

Selected courses are delivered via a video cassette. Video cassettes are mailed to the students who can then view the course information with a video cassette recorder (VCR).

Selected courses can be offered by means of interactive video. This allows the students and faculty at separate locations the ability to interact with each other during class lectures, discussions, etc. Digital Dakota Network (DDN) is the most commonly used provider of this service. If you are interested in taking a course that is delivered via DDN, you should be aware of the process that may be required to coordinate the DDN rooms.

Tuition and Fees

Distance Education students , either degree- or non-degree-seeking, will be charged $181.45 per undergraduate credit hour and $240.20 per graduate credit hour (Summer 2005 - Spring 2006), regardless of delivery method and state of residence. These tuition rates are subject to change by the South Dakota Board of Regents.

Registration Process

To register for distance education courses through the EUC, you need to complete the following steps:

1. Perform a course search .

2. View course information for those courses you are interested in pursuing.

3. Select the "Request Registration" button in the upper-right-hand corner of the course display screen for those courses in which you wish to enroll.

4. If you are not logged in, you will be asked to either log in if you are already a registered user of the EUC or you will be asked to become a registered user of the EUC.

5. After successfully logging in, you should now be returned to the course display screen with the "Request Registration" button no longer visible. You should also see a "Submit Registration Request" button in the tool bar.

6. At any time you can select "Submit Registration Request" from the tool bar. This will take you to your registration card. The registration card will list those courses that you have chosen to pursue and for which you are not yet registered. It will display course information, credit hours, price per credit, total price per course, and an order total.

7. You will be given the option to remove a course from your course listing. This is done by selecting the "delete" button to the right of the course information. This will remove that specific course from your registration card.

8. Once you are satisfied with the information on your course registration, you can submit your registration information by selecting the "Submit Registration Request" button. This will submit a request for course registration to the offering university of each course.

9. Next you will be asked to identify your home or affiliated university, whether you wish to be a degree-seeking or a non-degree-seeking student, and if you are an undergraduate or a graduate student.

10. Indication that you are not admitted or affiliated with a university and that you wish to become an undergraduate degree-seeking student will direct the website to CollegeNet where you can go through the process of becoming admitted to the university or universities of your choice. Your registration information will be sent to the appropriate places. But, remember that you must be admitted to a university before you can register for courses.

11. Indication that you are not admitted or affiliated with a university and that you wish to become a non-degree-seeking student will direct the website to a Non-Degree Seeking Student Application. On this application you will be required to specify the university with which you wish to be affiliated. Your registration and non-degree-seeking application will be sent to the appropriate place. But, remember you must be admitted as a non-degree-seeking student before you can register for courses.

12. Indication that you are admitted or affiliated with a university will result in your registration being sent to the appropriate place. Remember that your university indication will be verified. If the university indication is not accurate, a message will be sent to you and you will need to take appropriate action. During this time, you will not be registered for courses until your admission information is accurate.

13. Once admission information is verified, your course registration will be processed.

14. You will receive confirmation of your course registration, including any changes that may have occurred due to closed courses, unpaid fees, etc. via e-mail.

15. This confirmation will give you the option to pay for tuition and fees via credit card or to send in your payment.
