South
Dakota CollegePrep
Project
Information
available for
South Dakota Counselors
The
SDCollegePrep Project is a statewide collaborative
effort of the Board of Regents, its six public universities,
school superintendents, counselors, and professional organizations
that are dedicated to the same goals: helping our children
and their families plan and prepare for the option to attend
college and succeed. The website is at http://www.sdbor.edu/sdcollegeprep/
.
The
Project includes two parts:
-
Each
fall and spring collegeprep flyers are mailed to approximately
56,000 seventh through twelfth grade students. The publications
include information regarding how, why, and when to plan
for college, whether it is to attend a public or private
university or a technical school. It also includes information
on how an education can make a difference in salaries
throughout an individual's lifetime, and a model plan
of study that recommends classes students should take
at each grade level, in preparing for college. After the
South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship was enacted information
on qualifications were included in the spring flyer.
-
The
SDCollegePrep website's goal is to communicate to South
Dakota students, their parents, and educators with accurate,
high quality information about courses that will help
prepare students for college-level entry, personal and
academic growth, financial resources, and planning skills
needed to prepare well for college and to make informed
decisions.
Students
have the ability to logon to the website, enter courses and
grades into their own personal planner, and compare these
courses to university admissions standards and SD Opportunity
Scholarship criteria. They can participate in the "College
Information Filing System" which allows the student to enter
and keep track of their test scores, scholarship and financial
information, admissions application information, immunizations,
transcripts, college visits and orientations, housing and
meals deadlines and selections, college registration information
and books and supplies needed.
The
website has links to public and private universities, tribal
colleges and technical institutes in South Dakota as well
as national college search engines. Students have the ability
to perform degree searches by selecting a desired major from
a drop-down list and the results will show which public universities
in South Dakota offer that particular degree.
There
is also a resource area where students can select links to
other websites which contain information on math, science,
English and social studies, as well as references and facts.
These links are excellent tools for students to use for studying
and learning information outside the classroom. |
